Workshop

Linda Wernikoff ran an informative conference. The presenters of the work shops were the best and most experience in the field of Special Education. The keynote speaker Richard D. Lavoie fascinated the standing room only audience of 500 people. One of his most poignant comments was inspired by the African proverb- “When Elephants Fight, It’s the Grass That Gets Trampled. Consequently, he was alluding to the children getting hurt when the parents and the school fight, and do not work together. Read the rest of this entry »

Bylaws Committee - Chair Mary Silver

The Bylaws Committee plans to review the council’s current bylaws to make recommendations to the 2007-2008 Council, and to ensure that the Council’s bylaws accurately reflect the most recent Office of Parent Engagement’s “Guide for Education Council’s Bylaws.” This guide states, under Article VIII Amendment of Bylaws: “Consistent with law, policy and regulations governing Community and Citywide Education Councils and the Department of Education, bylaws are amendable.” Read the rest of this entry »

Parent’s Lobby Day: A Job Well Done

On Lobby Day in Albany, March 13, the Chancellor’s Parent Advisory Council (CPAC) took 1,700 parents, students and educators to meet with our city and state representatives. It was a great District 2 effort and a recognizable demonstration of community strength. Issues addressed included: parent empowerment; mayoral control of the schools; class size reduction; English Language Learners; cell phone ban; charter schools; and high-stakes testing.

Stuyvesant H.S. PA Executive Board Passes Resolution Rejecting the Schools Reorganization

March 15th, 2007

Stuyvesant High School Parent Association Executive Board passed a resolution rejecting the Mayor’s and Chancellor’s Schools Reorganization. The resolution states, in part, “the Stuyvesant High School Parents’ Association cannot support the DOE Children First proposal and calls upon the Mayor and Chancellor to postpone implementation of this plan and immediately call public hearings on the priorities for education spending and restructuring of the New York City public schools.”
